  1. A plant hormone that promotes stem and
  2. root growth in plants.  Auxins influence many
  3. aspects of plant growth and development,
  4. including cell enlargement, inhibition of
  5. development of axillary buds, tropisms, and
  6. the initiation of roots.  Synthetic auxins
  7. are used in rooting powders for cuttings, and
  8. in some weedkillers, where the high
  9. concentrations cause such rapid growth that
  10. the plants die. They are also used to prevent
  11. premature fruit-drop in orchards.  The most
  12. common naturally occuring auxin is known as
  13. indoleacetic acid, or IAA.  It is synthesized
  14. in the shoot apex and transported to other
  15. parts of the plant.
